Talking to my 13 yr old on a mom-son date that was long overdue, I was explaining how I practice mindfulness, and how important it is to accept your initial negative reaction to something, to challenges and such that arise. I was saying how I have learned that life is disaster and miracle at the same time, that moments can be full of chaos and joy at the same time, full of devastation and celebration in the same space of time.
Life is disaster and miracle at the same time.
The key is to recognize and accept your initial instinct to react negatively, to accept the anger and sadness, and let it pass through you. To experience it and validate it without judgement. And then to just let go of it. To move through it and let it move through you. Then you can move forward, solve problems, meet challenges, and find the path to joy.
Find the path to joy.
The universe operates on natural laws, and gravity is not the only one. The law of opposites is about combining opposite forces, to create and maintain balance. Like a battery combining positive and negative charges to create electricity. Balance creates power.
Balance creates power.

We can create this balance in ourselves:
And then I said “Thank you for giving me practice this week, cause I know it was a very challenging week for you, and your brother. But it allowed me to do “homework” and practice these principles every day.”
Really, every day brought several instances where I had to actively accept the negativity, and move on to problem solving. It sounds simple, to put it that way. It did not in any way feel simple at the time.
But he thanked me. He thanked me for being able to accept and move past my negative emotions and move into solution mode. He thanked me for helping him process his crises.
- By letting the negative emotions exist, we make room for the positive
- By validating anger, we allow forgiveness
- By accepting rejection, we make way for acceptance
